How to Get Your Refrigerator Ready for a Move

Preparing Your Refrigerator for a Relocation

Moving a refrigerator can be challenging, but with some thoughtful preparation, you can ensure it arrives in great shape at your new home. At Ray the Mover, we know how important it is to handle large appliances like refrigerators carefully.

Here’s how to properly prepare your fridge and simplify your moving day:

Step 1: Empty and Clean

Start by removing all food from the fridge and freezer. Use up perishables or consider donating them. Once empty, clean the interior thoroughly using a mild soap solution to get rid of spills, stains, and odors. Make sure to dry everything well to prevent mold or mildew during the move.

Step 2: Defrost the Freezer

If your refrigerator includes a freezer, defrost it at least 24 hours before moving. Turn off the appliance and open the freezer door so the ice can melt. Use towels to soak up any water and keep your moving process free from leaks and water damage.

Step 3: Disconnect and Secure

Unplug the fridge and disconnect any water lines if it has an ice maker or water dispenser. Wrap the power cord and secure it to the back to prevent damage. Take out any removable parts, such as shelves and drawers, and pack them separately to keep them safe.

Step 4: Protect Your Refrigerator

Use moving blankets or padded covers to shield the fridge from dents and scratches. Secure the doors with strong tape or bungee cords to ensure they stay closed during transport.

Step 5: Let It Settle

Once at your new location, let the fridge sit unplugged for a few hours so the coolant can settle. Afterward, you can plug it back in and start using it as usual.

Following these steps will prepare your refrigerator for a safe and successful move. If you need assistance with packing, loading, or transporting your appliances, Ray the Mover is here to help make your move seamless!
